GRTW Run Workshop: Running Technique

September 30, 2017 at 10:00

IMG_5524
Did you know that the way that you swing your arms or hold your head as you run could contribute or prevent you getting injured as you run?
Moreover, if you get your technique right – and it does take practise – you could improve your pace, particularly over long distance events of half marathon and above.

If you want to learn how you could improve YOUR running technique to prevent injury and improve your speed, join us for this 75 minute outdoor workshop.

We will break down how the body moves as you run, focusing on each individual component so you have a better understanding of what muscles are activated and what muscles SHOULD be activated. You will need to bring a phone with enough memory to take video (even better if it can take slo-mo) and a notepad and pen.

Working in pairs, you’ll video each other and we’ll then go over your videos so that you can assess your own style. Seeing firsthand on video how you run is one of the most effective ways of ensuring you make changes.

You will need to bring a mat and a phone that has enough memory on it to take video. Also bring a notepad and pen so that you can take notes.

N.B Please note that we will re-schedule this if poor weather (heavy rain) is forecast for the day. There will be limited spaces.

Meet at the stands at Preston Park Velodrome (far side/west) of the track. Parking is by meter in the park.

We will have three course times, 6.15am-7am, 7am-7.45am and 9.45am-10.45am. You must commit to one time slot only. The eating plan will also be available to purchase separately. USE THE CODE SBB FOR 20% EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT – OFFER ENDS  midnight 26th MAY 2017

Summer is knocking on the door! Let the sunshine in to your life, refresh your eating habits, challenge yourself to try something new with our two weeks of healthy movement including yoga, Pilates-inspired core work, obstacle adventure sessions and lots more.

It will also be accompanied by an eating plan based on the principles of the Fast Mimicking Diet.

Everyone has heard about the 5:2 diet and how successful it is for weight-loss and your health. But, here’s the rub…it’s pretty miserable fasting every week for two days. The new FMD eating plan, devised by Valter Longo, professor of gerontology and biological sciences at the University of California, involves cutting calories for just five days per month and it has been shown to have the same positive effects, improving cholesterol levels, BMI, reduced blood sugar levels and blood pressure, not to mention your waistline.

This course will involve 3 x 45 minute exercise sessions per week aimed at improving lean muscle mass, mobility and cardiovascular health – and confidence! Fun and effective, all you have to do is turn up.

**Please note this course and eating plan is NOT suitable for diabetics and you should consult your GP if you have any health condition that may be contraindicated with a intermittent fasting plan.

Book via our booking page. Assessments are additional at £30 for pre and post.

How to train smart for Brighton Half or a Marathon

October 14, 2016 at 5:11
Posted by Rachael Woolston

Does your training largely consist of downloading a training plan off an event site and vaguely following it just to get up to distance? Take the stress out of training and achieve better results by training smarter and thinking about it NOW

Train smart for endurance

Train smart for endurance

First off, there is nothing inherently wrong with doing the above if that’s all you can fit in, but if you really want to achieve your goal – even if that is to just reach the end smiling, then putting some thought into your training and doing it now BEFORE you start even thinking about adding running miles is essential.

Your training should include cycles, a macro, micro and mesocycles – this sounds more complicated than it is but as an essential start point, think about your overall goal – I want to run a marathon in April and get sub 4 hours/do it without getting injured/run it on 3 training sessions per week. Whatever it is, having the goal allows you then to work backwards and plan in your training to get you to that point, including putting in the races that will help you to reach that target and more importantly the FOUNDATION work that you need to put in now to build your strength.

It will also help you to take into account the changing nature of your training; it’s all very well having a set plan (which is better than not having one!) but injury, illness, busy work times all mean that you need to adapt your mesocycles to accommodate this rather than giving up on your plan entirely and winging it. Over the last eight years we’ve trained women to half marathon and marathon levels, this is where you see most people going wrong – wing it and you’ll end up with a broken wing!

Confused by all of this? To make it easy for you, right now (if doing a half marathon in Feb or a marathon in Spring) you should be entering your base training period, which means building the strength and stability, addressing any imbalances and working on your core.

We’ve created a RunStrong weekly class to help address this for more experienced runners while our Autumn Burn four week course which starts Monday 17th on Hove Lawns and Queen’s Park (and Worthing for two weeks) is aimed at total beginners who have not done much running and just need to wake up their muscles to get them working while getting to the headspace of thinking about regular training.

If you are an experienced marathon runner though and aiming for a specific race target, you may want to try our marathon mentoring service with run coach, Tara, a sub 3 hour 20 min marathon runner who lives and breathes the sport and can help you one to one, writing a plan every four to six weeks tailored specifically to where you are/how you have progressed.

If you are interested in any of these things, get in touch or book online. Happy Running!

Run to the Advent Beach Huts

November 30, 2015 at 6:04
Posted by Rachael Woolston

Need inspiration to help you stay fit this festive season? Try our run to the Advent Beach Hut challenge…

If you’ve never experienced the beach hut advent calendar, you have missed out. Every December from 1st -24th, a different beach hut along Brighton and Hove seafront opens, just like an advent calendar.

Every owner decides on their own theme and there are usually mince pies, mulled wine and even a bit of carol singing sometimes.

Last year, at Fitbitch, several of us met and ran to a different hut and it turned out to be a GREAT way of staying motivated to run.

Simply choose a starting point where you can meet with friends and then run to the hut. Some could be very close so you could choose to do a fast tempo run there, while for the ones further away, do it as a longer training run.

Of course, if you don’t live in Brighton, you could devise your own mystery advent running tour.

If you decide to do the Brighton Run to the Advent Hut challenge, don’t forget to share your pictures to our Facebook wall.

For details of the hut locations every day click here.
